Mission, Vision, Baby Steps

When it comes to setting goals, I like to start with the end in mind. I don’t just think about what I want to accomplish next, I go deeper and think about who I want to become next… What does the next best version of myself LOOK like? What does she do? What does she wear? Who does she know? How does she FEEL?

This “End Goal” then becomes your North Star. Knowing who you want to become, and particularly how you want to feel, is now your compass. X marks the spot.

But here’s the key…

This is just the starting line. It’s easy to get caught up in making a vision board, doing a visualization meditation, and listing out goals… and then never taking a step down the road to get there. Because let’s face it, goals can often feel lofty!

I want to… Lose 30 pounds! Start a business! Run a marathon! Travel Europe! All wonderful, all big and shiny and fun to think about. And you can achieve them all! But in order to do that you’re going to have to create the map around the X to guide you.

The dreams are your X, but the map is the journey. The map is the steps you need to take. The day in and day out. The baby steps. The milestones along the way. These are what make up the map. The journey is truly what is meant to be achieved.

If you don’t first lose 5 pounds, you can’t get to 30… if you don’t first get your steps in, and drink your water, and improve your nutrition… you won’t even get to 5. You don’t go from 0 to 30. You don’t actually go from couch to 5k, you don’t start a business overnight.

Take your big goals, and your small goals and break them down into the baby steps in order to create your map.

And once you’ve got the map, once you know what steps you need to start taking, you can’t stop there either. You’re going to need to follow through! You’re going to need to take action.

The magic, the success, the actual achieving of the goals… is found in those small right actions. It’s found in the baby steps you take to get where you’re going.

When I first started on my healing journey, I knew I had huge dreams out in the distance, but my very first goal, one that I knew would support all of the others that would come after achieving it was, “I healed my childhood trauma and found inner peace.”

This goal was about who I wanted to BE, and how I wanted to FEEL. I wanted to be at peace. I want to feel calm, confident, creative and most importantly, I wanted to release the bonds my past had on me.

Without achieving this first, I would have continued on in shame, repeating unhealthy patterns, angry, depressed, anxious, drowning it all with drugs and alcohol. I didn’t want that for me. I don’t want that for anyone.

What’s important to recognize here is that healing childhood trauma and finding inner peace was a loft goal in and of itself!

It took almost two years. It took therapy. It took small right actions that supported my mental health, day in and day out, and never giving up on that goal. It takes consistency, dedication and remembering why you started. It is as simple and as hard as that.

And, now that I’m “here”, it’s important to note that there is a level of maintenance required to stay “here”. Daily meditation and prayer, journaling, exercise, good nutrition. All of these things support the healed version of me that didn’t exist yet, 2-3 years ago. These daily right actions that I learned over time, are ultimately what became the 8 Key Factors of Full Circle Wellness, because they are how I got here.

Repeating these healthy habits day by day is completely retraining my brain, and continuing to undo the thoughts, habits and trauma stories of a younger me.

It takes time, the journey is long, the healing is never over, there is always something new waiting around the corner for you to conquer. And while it starts with the VISION, and the creation of a MISSION to get there, achieving any kind of goal is found in the BABY STEPS you take every day on the way “there.”

And trust me, once you get “there”, a new “there” is going to pop up out of the bushes, ready to redirect you so that your journey can continue.

The journey is never over. The journey is what is meant to be achieved.

So settle in, and take the first step, and then another, and another, and before you know it, you will look back on all you have achieved and wonder why you were so hung up on there being an “end goal” in the first place.

Be Well,
L
