MINDEST OVER MATTERS

Throughout my life, I’ve had several ‘holy shit’ moments. The kind of moments where a nugget of wisdom hits you like a ton of bricks and for the first time ever, really changes the way you think about something, even if you’ve heard the same thing before. Sometimes, there is just something about the way it comes through in that particular moment that shifts your perspective entirely.

Has this ever happened to you?

I’ve had this happen listening to podcasts, reading books, meditating, getting advice from my elders, and even scrolling through social media! And every time it happens, something in me fundamentally changes, and I think “WOW! This is IT! That’s my TRUTH!”

The first time I can remember this happening I was in my very early twenties. Freshman year in my undergrad, new Boo back at home, anxiety in my back pocket, depressed, stressed and just trying to pass finals, and I come to find out that Boo doesn’t believe in Valentine’s Day. Y’all, I was irate! How could he not feel the exact same way as me about a ludicrous holiday?! And then one afternoon, silently sobbing in the back of a class, I had a wise professor chat with me, and say something that dried my eyes, and changed my perspective for good, she said: “You have to love people for who they are, not for who you want them to be. Or leave them.” DAMN.

This changed my whole perspective. In that moment, and the sleepless nights that followed, I came to not just know, but deeply understand and fully internalize that it is OK, and quite frankly healthy, for two people to be together and have different hobbies or interests, and beliefs, and even opinions about Valentine’s Day.

Again, just last year. Normal day at the office, headphones in, podcast on, and Mel Robbins comes through with a drop of wisdom that had me out of my chair looking for a pen and my notebook so I could write it down. She said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Your dreams are not meant to be achieved. Your dreams are just the North Star, they’re your guide. The JOURNEY is what is meant to be achieved.” JAW. ON. THE. FLOOR.

It still gives me goosebumps.

This burrowed into my soul. This changed how I looked at my fitness journey, my healing journey, my career goals. This one sentence in the middle of an hour long podcast changed how I perceived my entire LIFE.

This, my friends, is a Mindset Shift.

It’s one thing to know something… to read a quote, or hear a sermon and think “Yes girl! Preach! Ain’t it the TRUTH!”

It’s another thing to hear something and have it completely sink it, altering your vantage point for good.

Another time this happened for me, I was listening to Tony Robbins give his talk on “Strategy, Story, State” in a live virtual event. He got to talking about the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, and said something to the effect of, “Your Identity is your Story. You are who you believe yourself to be. You are capable of what you believe yourself to be capable. If you change your Story, you change your Identity.” BOOM.

He goes on to explain that if we tell ourselves a story that we are (for example), “fat and lazy and never going to amount to anything”, then that will be true for us. We will never try to break out of that identity because “that’s just who we are,” we will subconsciously default to this because it is what we believe to be true about ourselves. But if we tell ourselves, “I’m fit, healthy and I love and take care of my body.” That becomes how we view ourselves (our Story, our Identity), and how we view ourselves dictates the actions that we take.

I tried this out for myself, I started saying, “I am fit and healthy and I love my body.” I wrote it down everyday (along with several other things).

Sure as shit, my daily actions started to align with that new Story. It took some time, but it was almost like, every time I was presented with a choice, my brain adapted to the new Story and thought, “well, what would someone who is fit and healthy and loves their body do?” Which would then dictate the actions I started to take. Even after years of taking the opposite kinds of actions.

Blew my mind! Still blows my mind.

All of that to say, the MIND is an extremely powerful tool. Tell your brain what to focus on and it will focus there. Settle into a new mindset and your entire world will shift in an instant.

Creating a Mindset Shift is like building up your muscles. It takes time, and repetition, and most importantly, it takes choosing to start.

Be Well,
