Are Your Emotions Making You Sick?
There is a deep and undeniable connection between the Mind, the Spirit, and the Body. This is what Full Circle Wellness is all about. Emotional and/or Spiritual wounds can ultimately manifest as physical symptoms when left unhealed. While this might sound like it toes the line of pseudoscience or the “woo-woo”, I’m here to personally attest to the fact that… Well, it’s very real. Let’s discuss.
Have you ever noticed that stress seems to lead to headaches? Or, that unresolved grief can feel like a heavy weight in your chest? Have you ever had anxiety for so long, so bad you ended up with a stomach ulcer? Just me?
Our bodies are not just physical vessels. We are souls having a human experience! Our bodies are deeply interconnected with our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual well-being. Many physical symptoms and even chronic illnesses often begin as imbalances in our emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies. Understanding this connection can help us uncover the root causes of our discomfort, which can help us start to take meaningful steps toward healing.
Physical Ailments, Emotional Roots
Louise Hay, a pioneer in the mind-body healing space, believed that specific emotions correlate with certain physical ailments. In her book You Can Heal Your Life, she outlines how repressed anger, fear, and guilt often manifest in the body as illness. For example:
Back pain can be linked to a lack of support, whether financial, emotional, or relational.
Throat issues may arise from an inability to speak one’s truth, or as a result of suppressing one's emotions.
Digestive problems might reflect difficulty processing life experiences or deep-seated fear, or anxiety.
Dr. Joe Dispenza, a New York Times best-selling author, researcher, lecturer, and consultant, is another expert in this field, who explores how our thoughts and emotions shape our health on a neurological and physiological level.
Joe explains that when we live in chronic states of stress, fear, or resentment, we create a biochemical environment that literally weakens our immune system and disrupts our body's ability to heal. Wow!
He shares that by shifting our thoughts, and our emotional state, we can activate our body’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing us to function optimally. Woo-woo, I know. Stay with me…
Pathology vs. Deeper Healing Work
It’s really important that we learn to recognize when a physical symptom requires medical intervention versus when it may be an invitation to look inward.
While modern medicine is crucial for treating acute conditions, serious illness, or even broken bones, many chronic ailments (think migraines, insomnia, gut issues, skin issues, even auto-immune conditions) often have emotional and energetic roots.
Here are some KEY signs that a deeper, internal healing process may be what you need instead of another form of medication:
Recurring or unexplained symptoms despite medical treatment
Patterns of illness that align with emotional trauma or stress
Feeling disconnected or numb in certain areas of your body
Chronic fatigue or pain that worsens with emotional distress
You Can Heal Your Life
Healing begins with awareness and small, intentional actions. If you suspect your physical symptoms have emotional or spiritual origins, here are some ways to start your journey:
Observe Your Body’s Signals – Instead of just suppressing symptoms, ask yourself: What is my body trying to tell me? THIS IS SO KEY! Get quiet. Sit with yourself. FEEL everything, and take notice. Approach with curiosity. Answers will come through.
Practice Emotional Release – Journaling, therapy, and somatic work (such as breathwork, tapping or movement) can help process and release trapped emotions. Bessel van der Kolk tells us in his book The Body Keeps the Score, that, “Trauma victims cannot recover until they become familiar with and befriend the sensations in their bodies. Being frightened means that you live in a body that is always on guard. Angry people live in angry bodies. The bodies of child-abuse victims are tense and defensive until they find a way to relax and feel safe. In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations and the way that their bodies interact with the world around them. Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past.”
Rewire Thought Patterns – Engage in affirmations, meditation, and visualization to shift negative beliefs and create a more healing mindset. Something like cognitive behavioral therapy can be a huge help in rewiring your thought patterns, and unlearn unhelpful internal messages, as well.
Engage in Self-Care Rituals – Nourish yourself with sleep, balanced nutrition, movement, and time in nature to support your body’s healing process. Taking time to intentional relax, do nothing, and clear the mind, goes an incredibly long way in relieving the BODY of stress, tension and heavy emotions that you may not be registering with your Mind.
Seek Support – Healing is not meant to be done in isolation. Consider working with a therapist, life coach, or holistic practitioner who can help guide you through your journey. Seek community where you can! This is why I’ve created Full Circle Wellness… for folks on their healing journey to have the resources and the support that I didn’t have when I started.
