Healing with Hobbies

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into a cycle of endless productivity, with little room left for leisure, creativity, rest or joy.

But, what if the piece you’re currently missing to feeling whole and grounded lies in making the time? What if I told you that rediscovering hobbies and prioritizing play IS productive?

Engaging in activities purely for the joy of it can be a profound way to heal, reconnect with yourself, and create a richer, more balanced life. Joy and Leisure is a of the slice of the Full Circle Wellness pie after all!

The Healing Power of Play

Hobbies aren't just a way to pass the time—they’re a form of self-expression and a sanctuary from the demands of daily life. They allow us to dial into something we love, and reconnect with our inner child in the process, which is how play can ultimately contribute to the healing journey! Let’s take a look at why…

  1. Stress Relief: Activities like painting, gardening, or playing an instrument can help calm your mind and lower cortisol levels. Immersing yourself in something you enjoy can act as a meditative practice, creating a sense of peace.

  2. Emotional Processing: Creative hobbies allow you to explore and express emotions that might otherwise feel overwhelming. Journaling, crafting, or dancing can serve as outlets for feelings you didn’t know you were holding onto.

  3. Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a small project, learning a new skill, or even finishing a puzzle can boost your confidence and provide a sense of purpose, reminding you of your capability!

  4. Connection and Community: Joining a club, taking a class, or sharing your work in an online community can help you connect with like-minded people and build a support network, which is so crucial to having a whole life, and being well.

PLAY, PLAY, PLAY

When was the last time you truly played? Play isn’t just for kids you know—it’s a vital part of being human! Research shows that adults who make time for play experience improved creativity, better problem-solving skills, and lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Play doesn’t have to look like traditional games (though it can!). It might involve:

  • Trying a new sport or activity with friends

  • Creating something silly or just for fun, without judgment!

  • Engaging in improvisation, whether through acting, music, or even storytelling

Play allows you to step out of the rigid expectations of the day to day slog of adulthood and tap into your inner child’s needs, offering a lightness and freedom we often forget exists.

Make the Time

Incorporating hobbies and play into your schedule requires intention, and some level of planning, but it doesn’t have to feel like a chore. I’ve got a few tips for you!

  1. Schedule It: Treat your hobbies and playtime as non-negotiable appointments in your calendar. Prioritize this time just as you would work or errands.

  2. Start Small: If time feels limited, start with just 15-20 minutes a few times a week. It’s the consistency that matters, not the duration.

  3. Experiment: Give yourself permission to try new activities without the pressure of being “good” at them. Remember, the goal is joy, not mastery.

  4. Create Space: Set up a dedicated area in your home for your hobbies or play. This can help mentally signal that it’s time to unwind and have fun.

  5. Invite Others: Sometimes, having a partner or a group makes it easier to commit and adds an element of connection!

Rediscovering hobbies and play is an act of self-love and self-care.

It’s a reminder that you are more than your responsibilities, and that joy and creativity are essential to your well-being!

So, pick up that paintbrush, lace up your dancing shoes, or dive into that book you’ve always wanted to write. Healing is often found in the moments we allow ourselves to simply be.

How will you make space for hobbies and play this week?

Be well,
L
