Aligning & Nurturing Your Chakras
Chakras are energy centers in your body. They're like spinning wheels that help keep your physical, emotional, and spiritual self in balance.
The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit (if you've ever done yoga, you might be familiar with Sanskrit) and means "wheel" or "disk." These energy portals are said to help regulate different aspects of our well-being.
The 7 Main Chakras & What They Do:
❤️ Root Chakra (Muladhara) – Located at the base of your spine, this chakra is all about stability, security, and feeling grounded. When out of balance, you may feel aloof, lost or unsafe.
🧡 Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – Found just below the belly button, this energy center governs emotions, creativity, and pleasure. When out of balance, you may feel numb, and disconnected.
💛 Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – Sitting in your upper abdomen, it fuels confidence, personal power, and motivation. When out of balance, this chakra can leave you feelin insecure, and unmotivated into action.
💚 Heart Chakra (Anahata) – Located in the center of your chest, it controls love, compassion, and connection. When out of balance you may find yourself feeling disconnected, in a state of victimhood/blame, or cold towards the world around you.
💙 Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – At your throat, this chakra governs communication, truth, and self-expression. When you of balance you may find yourself feeling caged or unable to live authentically.
💜 Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – Between your eyebrows, this energy portal enhances intuition, insight, and inner wisdom. When you of balance, this can leave you feeling disillusioned, out of touch with your goals or the vision you have for you life, or closed off.
💖 Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – Sitting at the top of your head, it connects you to higher consciousness, spirituality, and universal energy. When out of whack, this could leave you feeling fearful and unconscious, like you are not driving the car that is your own life.
Why Chakra Alignment Matters
When your chakras are balanced, energy flows freely, helping you feel aligned, vibrant, and at peace. But when they’re blocked, you might experience emotional or physical imbalances (as mentioned above), like anxiety, lack of motivation, or even health issues.
How to Keep Your Chakras Healthy:
Movement & Breath Work – Yoga, tai chi, or simply deep breathing can help clear blockages. Somatic work like stretching with breath is a great practice to try if you're feeling misaligned.
Meditation & Visualization – Picture your chakras as spinning wheels of energy, glowing in their respective colors. There are great chakra meditations on the BetterSleep app, but you can also find free ones on YouTube or Spotify.
Crystals & Essential Oils – Some people use crystals like amethyst for the third eye or rose quartz for the heart chakra to enhance balance. This has crossed the woo-woo line for many, but I will just say, don't knock it until you try it! You could also look into working with a reiki practitioner to release energies from the body.
Mindful Eating & Affirmations – Eating chakra-supporting foods (e.g., leafy greens for the heart) and speaking affirmations can bring help bring about harmony, and rejuvenate your energy.
Understanding your chakras is like learning the language of your own energy. When you listen to and nurture them, you’ll feel more balanced, empowered, and aligned with your true self. Just like your body needs food and exercise to stay healthy, your chakras need nourishment too! You can support these energy centers through movement, mindfulness, and even the foods you eat.
How to nurture the ROOT CHAKRA:
Foods: Root vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beets), proteins (beans, lentils, eggs), red foods (strawberries, tomatoes)
Practices: Walking barefoot, spending time in nature, grounding meditations
Crystals: Red jasper, hematite, black tourmaline
How to nurture the SACRAL CHAKRA:
Foods: Orange foods (oranges, mangoes, sweet potatoes, carrots), nuts, seeds, coconut
Practices: Dancing, swimming, creative expression (painting, writing, music)
Crystals: Carnelian, orange calcite, moonstone
How to nurture the SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA:
Foods: Yellow foods (bananas, pineapple, corn, turmeric), whole grains, ginger
Practices: Core-strengthening exercises, setting boundaries, sun exposure
