Progress Over Perfection

Embarking on a health and wellness journey can feel like setting off on a winding road with no clear end in sight. You just start trying stuff out to see where it gets you, and cry a lot along the way, and sometimes, it feels like you’re not making a lick of progress, when really… you are.

While goals like improved fitness, balanced hormones, or a more mindful outlook are powerful motivators, the true magic lies in the journey - the small, right actions - the consistent steps forward that pave the way to lasting growth, and change.

Let’s dive into how you can celebrate progress, track it effectively, and let go of the need for perfection along the way, because I know it’s there.

The Perfection Monster is often lingering in the back of your psyche telling you that you’ve not done enough, or that you’re not trying hard enough, and let me be the one to tell you… She’s gotta go to bed. You don’t need that shit.

Why Progress Over Perfection Matters

As you may have guessed, the quest for perfection is often a fast track to burnout. That voice in the back of your mind setting unrealistic standards - whether it’s achieving a “perfect” body, mastering a new skill overnight, or sticking to a flawless routine - can discourage you from celebrating the very real gains you make along the way, faster than you can say “fuck off.”

This is why we gently let that Part of us know what’s up. She’s way too focused on the GAP, meanwhile you’re over here trying to focus on your GAIN (great book, by the way, check it out here).

Progress acknowledges that growth is not linear, even when Perfection wants it to be.

Looking at all that you’ve gained - all of the progress that you’ve made - allows you to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities. It also allows for flexibility, and compassion along the way. Both of which are necessary when you’re in it for the long haul.

In choosing to focus on your progress, you’ll find greater joy in the journey and a deeper connection to your evolving self.

Remember… The JOURNEY is what is meant to be achieved.

So, HOW then can you track your progress in a healthy way?

Tracking your progress doesn’t have to be about numbers on a scale or rigid calorie counts, or even millions of dollars in your bank account. Instead, think holistically about your health and wellness and focus on markers that truly reflect your goals and values. Here are some ideas:

  1. Journaling Your Journey

    • Keep a daily or weekly journal to log how you’re feeling—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Note improvements like increased energy, fewer mood swings, or reduced stress.

    • Write about victories big and small, from completing a workout to choosing a nourishing meal that made you feel great. I personally like to track wins in a spreadsheet where I do my monthly Money Parties (thank you, Fiscal Femme!)... When I go back and see all of the joy I created, or things I got done in a month, it feels WAY better than wallowing over how far I have yet to go towards any of my goals.

  2. Taking Photos or Videos

    • Visual reminders can be powerful. Document your journey through progress photos, videos, or even creative projects. Quite frankly, I think Instagram is great for this! Feel free to follow me along on my own health and wellness journey @thereal_leahsuzette over on the Gram.

    • Remember to focus on what you value, like improvements in posture, strength, or emotional resilience. Other people might value very different things when it comes to making progress, and setting goals.

  3. Tracking Habits

    • Use a habit tracker to monitor those small right actions, like drinking more water, meditating, or getting enough sleep. This is one of my FAVORITE ways to build a new habit, and yes, stickers are involved. In fact, I’ve created a free 30 day habit tracker, that you can get a hold of right here.

    • Celebrate streaks and acknowledge any days you break the chain—life happens! You can’t expect a perfect 30/30 day streak. That’s GREAT if you can pull that off! I know I cannot. Most people cannot. Consistency and progress isn’t about showing up 30 perfect days. It’s about showing up for 5, missing day 6 and half of day 7, and showing up again on day 8 and 9. It’s about not giving up when you fall. Using something like a habit tracker is a great way to visualize this! If you don’t hit the goal one day, try again the next day. The journey is not black and white. Keep going!

  4. Listening to Your Body

    • Track non-quantifiable changes, such as improved digestion, better sleep, or a lighter mood after exercising. These shifts are often the most meaningful! Whether you’re working on fitness or mental health, seeing your mood or your mindset change is an astounding moment!

  5. Regular Self-Assessments

    • Reflect. If you’re not sure where to start with a self-assessment, I got you! This is why I created Full Circle Wellness. You can download my free Pie of Life self-assessment right here 🙂

Celebrate Progress

Recognizing your wins, no matter how small, is crucial to staying motivated. Honor your progress! Celebrate your wins! Keep track, and know that you’re on the right path.

  • Create Rituals: Treat yourself to something restorative, like a yoga class, a relaxing bath, or a new book, when you hit a milestone.

  • Share Your Wins: Celebrate with loved ones or your community—positive reinforcement can be contagious!

  • Set Non-Aesthetic Goals: Shift your focus to achievements like running a certain distance, lifting heavier weights, or feeling more balanced in your emotions.

Let Go of Perfection

The journey to health and wellness is not a race; it’s a lifelong commitment to yourself. Keep perfectionism at bay with these tips:

  • Embrace Imperfection: Missed a workout? Ate a meal that didn’t align with your plan? That’s okay. Your worth isn’t tied to a single moment but to the sum of your efforts.

  • Learn from Setbacks: Instead of seeing a slip-up as failure, use it as an opportunity to reflect. What led to it, and how can you support yourself better next time? This is a great opportunity to journal, and look to understand the patterns that may be running your life.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Speak to yourself as you would a dear friend, always. Be kind, forgiving, and encouraging. Be your own cheerleader. Clap for your damn self. You got this!!

Progress is the true heart of any health and wellness journey.

All of this is about evolving at your own pace, honoring your unique path, and celebrating every step forward - every small right action. Perfection is an illusion, but PROGRESS? That’s real. Achievable. And worth celebrating.

So, take a moment today to look back at how far you’ve come. What’s one thing you can celebrate? Remember, every step counts. 💛

Be well,
L
