A Cornerstone of Health and Wellness: Sleep

Nowadays, it’s all too easy to sacrifice sleep for the demands of work, social commitments, and endless to-do lists, but I am here to tell you - the importance of getting good, quality rest cannot be overstated - it is a cornerstone of our overall health and wellness.

Sleep is essential for both physical and mental well-being. From boosting your immune system and heart health to enhancing your cognitive function and emotional well-being, the benefits of sleep are far-reaching. Prioritizing good, quality rest can literally transform your life.

Let’s Take a Look…

  1. Physical Health

    • Immune Function: Sleep is crucial for a strong immune system. During sleep, the body produces cytokines, which are proteins that help combat infections and inflammation (so key!). Chronic sleep deprivation can weaken your immune response, making you more susceptible to illnesses. If you’re someone who regularly skimps on sleep, and you find yourself catching a cold more often than your peers, lack of sleep is likely to blame.

    • Heart Health: Quality sleep contributes to your overall cardiovascular health by regulating blood pressure and reducing stress on the heart. Poor sleep is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. At the end of the day, the body, especially the heart, needs rest to repair and retain proper functionality.

    • Weight Management: Adequate sleep helps regulate the hormones that control hunger and appetite (cortisol, ghrelin, and leptin). Lack of sleep can lead to imbalances in these hormones, increasing the likelihood of weight gain and obesity, or making it difficult to lose weight if you’re on a weight loss journey.

  2. Mental Health

    • Cognitive Function: Sleep is essential for cognitive processes such as memory consolidation, problem-solving, and creativity. Without sufficient rest, you may experience difficulties with concentration, decision-making, and learning. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve woken up from inadequate rest and had to struggle through brain fog, and an inability to focus all day long. No bueno! If you’re like me, and you’re on a mission to heal, and grow, and make an impact on the world… you’re gonna need your sleep!

    • Emotional Well-being: Sleep also plays a critical role in regulating mood and emotional health. Insufficient sleep is associated with higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Quality rest allows for emotional resilience and better coping mechanisms. While sleep is obviously rest for the body, it is also rest for the mind!

  3. Productivity

    • Well-rested individuals tend to be more alert, focused, and efficient in their daily tasks, duh! Quality sleep improves reaction times, reduces errors, and enhances overall performance in both professional and personal activities. Oh hey, cat-like reflexes!

  4. Exercise/Performance

    • For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, sleep is as important as training and nutrition. Seriously! Adequate rest supports muscle recovery, energy restoration, and physical endurance. This cannot be stressed enough. Good sleep also reduces the risk of injuries and improves overall athletic performance. I can’t tell you how many times I thought I could get through my workout on 5-6 hours of sleep, only to find that I could barely make it through the warm-up, result in a lackluster performance for an entire F45 class.

  5. Improved Relationships

    • Sleep impacts your ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive relationships. When well-rested, you are more patient, empathetic, and capable of managing interpersonal conflicts. On the contrary, if you’re like me, when you’re NOT well-rested, you’re… well… is there a buzzword for “tired and evil”? Like HANGRY, but, tired. Tangry? We’ll work on it.

  6. Long-term Health and Longevity

    • Consistently getting quality sleep can contribute to a longer, healthier life. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases, supports a healthy metabolism, and promotes overall longevity. AND, if you’re into “looking younger”... sleep is the key! Sleep, and a lot of water. Also, wash your face.

Clearly, prioritizing sleep is essential! So below, I’m offering you some practical tips for creating a sleep-friendly environment, establishing a consistent sleep schedule, and adopting relaxation techniques that can help you achieve the restful slumber you deserve.

  1. The Environment

    • Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. Get yourself some blackout curtains, maybe some earplugs, and/or white noise machines to enhance your sleep environment. I’m a big fan of a weighted eye mask, crocheted blankets, and BetterSleep for ambient sound - I recommend Green Noise, peepers, and campfire.

  2. Create a Consistent Sleep Schedule

    • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. I know it’s hard. I didn’t even get this one down until I was in my 30s. A solid sleep schedule helps regulate your body's internal clock and improves the quality of your sleep. Trust me.

  3. Eliminate Screens Before Bedtime

    • Some people say “limit exposure”, but I’m a fan of “eliminating exposure” before bed instead. Put your phone on the charger, in another room, away from your prying eyes, at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with your sleep cycle. It may seem innocuous, but it isn’t, I promise.

  4. Relax

    • Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath before bedtime. These practices can help signal to your body that it's time to wind down. I’m also a fan of stretching, journaling, and prayer!

  5. Food & Supplements

    • Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime. These can disrupt your sleep and prevent you from achieving restful slumber. Additionally, if you’ve got a nighttime supplement stack, it’s great to make that a part of your bedtime routine! I’m a BIG fan of Magnesium before bed, so I take my mag powder, as well as my vitamins before I hit the hay.

Incorporating good, quality sleep into your health and wellness journey is not a luxury but a necessity. Rest is not something you need to earn, it is something you deserve to make time and space to incorporate into your life.

The benefits of being well rested extend beyond just feeling rested; they permeate every aspect of your life, from physical health to emotional well-being and beyond. By prioritizing sleep, you invest in a healthier, happier, and more productive YOU. So, make sleep a cornerstone of your wellness routine and watch as it transforms your life for the better.

Rest well,
L
